Thanks to one of our readers for sending this one in. Nearly 10 years ago, I was attending a small high school in a stupid little redneck town where folks were either too stupid to figure out how to use birth control, or just didn't understand why they'd want to. The net result was that probably half the girls in my graduating class of 256 either had a kid or were pregnant by the time we graduated. It became so common that it wasn't even scandalous anymore.

Which is why I read with great amusement a story about two girls who won an essay contest about sexual abstinence who are now pregnant. "Having sex without a condom is like playing russian roulette with your life," one of them wrote. So my question is, if you know that, then how can you be so stupid?

I live in Polk County Florida, (which is every bit as backwater as the name implies)and there is an abstinence-only program in effect for the public school system. As you might expect, Polk County has one of the highest teen birth rates in Florida. I had a chance to interview one of our county commissioners about a month ago, and I asked him about the problem. His stance is (and this was widely publicized here in central Florida) that we may have a high teen birth rate, but we have a low rate of abortion. Hence, girls in Polk County are "too moral" to get abortions. I dont even know if there is a name for that kind of faulty logic.

In my wn, they don't even have any sexual abstinence classes and aren't any time soon. They actually wonder why so many girls are pregnant!

Well, abstinence-only people love saying that condoms are ineffective, even dangerous. So when kids finish up the course and decide to get laid anyway, they figure the condom won't make the sex any safer, so why bother?

On a semi-related note, does anyone recall when abstinence-only was proposed in the early 80's? Everyone regarded it as a big joke, and now it's taken over the world. Sort of like its biggest fan, George W. Bush.

Is anyone shocked that abstinence only is NOT working? I know I'm not. I wonder if anyone has considered passing out condoms (and teaching kids about birth control)? After all, kids will be kids, and kids will get it on, pretty much regardless.

I'm pretty sure they've proved that abstinence-only programmes are actually much worse than real sex education.

It's a nice thought to think that kids'll wait until they can support a child to have sex, but it isn't going to happen. Sex is a primary drive, despite what anyone might want to tell you about humans being "higher" than animals. The chances of all teenagers waiting until they're even legal are slim to nil, unless you introduce a death penalty for unmarried mothers, or something.

I guess I'm the only one that either read the article in the link or noticed that the girl is quoted to say...Eboni Wilson wrote, "having sex with a condom is like playing Russian roulette with your life." She says "with" a condom not "without" maybe that has something to do with it. :)

Take a look at a small city in Ontario, Canada called Kawartha Lakes (Formerly Lindsay). It has the highest teen pregnancy rate in all of Canada! Hell, I am still in highschool there, you can hardly walk through the hallways without watching a couple to 10th graders 'getting it on' in the halls.
